Sony great boss to head Vienna State Opera

Austria's government named Bogdan Roscic on Wednesday as chief of the prestigious Vienna State Opera from 2020, supplanting Frenchman Dominique Meyer.

Roscic, 52, is at present president of Sony Music's traditional music division and has never run a musical show house. He was conceived in Serbia and experienced childhood in Austria.

"I trust we have to look to the future, despite the fact that that isn't to censure existing conditions," Culture Minister Thomas Drozda said as he declared the arrangement.

He said he needed to musical show house "to guarantee that it can pull in the worldwide stars of tomorrow… If you like, a State Opera 4.0."

In the time of Broadway and Netflix, "the class has lost significance and… faces at no other time seen rivalry for general society's opportunity and cash," Drozda said.
