17 dead as DR Congo police clash with cult members


Seventeen individuals have been killed in conflicts between DR Congo police and individuals from a cult group that believes the end of President Joseph Kabila's order will introduce the end of the world, a territorial senator said Thursday. 


Bienvenu Esimba, legislative head of DR Congo's northwestern Mongala region, said the conflicts softened out Wednesday up the commonplace capital Lisala when individuals from the faction smoldered many houses and assaulted a market before propelling an attack on neighborhood appointive commission workplaces. 

"The toll from the conflicts is 14 militiamen from the political-religious clique and three dead cops," Esimba told AFP by phone, including that faction pioneer Wami-Nene was among those murdered. 

A nearby Catholic cleric affirmed that clique individuals had propelled the assault. 

DR Congo is buried in political emergency two days after Kabila's second and last term in office had been because of end on December 20, without any signs that he is wanting to venture down. 

Esimba said the faction individuals, equipped with AK-47 strike rifles, had blazed 47 houses and assaulted the workplaces of the appointive commission since they judged the organization to be "futile". 

Troops needed to venture into "kill" the master Wami-Nene amid the three hours of viciousness until late morning on Wednesday, he said, including that security powers had "acted in real guard". 

The circumstance was quiet by Thursday morning, Esimba said. 

Lisala lies on the Congo stream somewhere down in the rainforest, exactly 1,000 kilometers (600 miles) upper east of the capital Kinshasa.
